RateItAll.com announces RateItAll Widgets - a syndication tool that opens up more than 20,000 RateItAll polls for publication on personal sites, MySpace profiles, or blogs.

San Francisco (PRWEB) May 5, 2006 — Online ratings community and social network RateItAll, Inc. (www.rateitall.com) announced today the launch of RateItAll Widgets – a syndication tool that allows site visitors to publish a snapshot of any RateItAll ratings list at no charge on their own Web site, blog, or MySpace profile page.

There are currently more than 20,000 interactive ratings lists published on RateItAll. These ratings lists cover virtually all genres, and range from topics like “Best Digital Camera” to “Best Place to get a Tattoo” to “Most Dangerous Animal to Man.” Beneath each ratings list, a snippet of code is displayed. Copying and pasting this code into a site template will display a Top 20 snapshot of that list on the individual’s site.

“Whether it be through Blogs, MySpace pages, or personal Web sites, self-publishing on the Web is reaching epidemic proportions,” said RateItAll President Lawrence Coburn. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer these publishers the tools to enhance their Web pages with RateItAll’s unique and interesting content.”

RateItAll’s free Weblister tool allows any registered member to create and manage their own interactive ratings list at no charge. Now, through the RateItAll Widgets program, Weblist publishers can push their content out to other Web sites.

“Our vision is to make it easy for our members to publish their content, to push it out around the Web, and finally, to earn money from that content,” said Coburn. “The introduction of RateItAll Widgets is an important step towards executing this vision.”

Myspace has an odd relationship with widgets. On one hand, they made it possible for users to pimp their pages with widgets. On the other, they don’t want widget makers to get too popular. There was a bit of an imbroglio a few months back regarding myspace "accidentally" blocking the embedded YouTube video player. According to Valleywag, they are at it again. This time with Buzznet. (Via Craig Newmark). Valleywag:

But Buzznet is a direct competitor, with similar photo-sharing, friend-linking, and other social features. Now MySpace blocks any mention of Buzznet in user profiles. While users can use Buzznet URLs in their MySpace blogs, any mention of "Buzznet.com" in a profile will turn into ".." So MySpace users can’t share their Buzznet pages — or, well, anything else they want to share from the other site.

But it’s not that simple. Buzznet can also work with MySpace — for example, to embed flash-based photo galleries like the one on Buzznet’s MySpace page. But flash embeds are blocked as well. For instance, if the Coachella festival resaved this profile, its Buzznet flash embeds would break.

My opinion: If this is true that they are blocking widgets from selective competitors, it is extremely short sighted. Myspace doesn’t need to resort to blocking competitors’ widgets in order to continue to grow. They don’t need to do it to ensure that their functionality is used. Further, if the blocking appears arbitrary or driven by competitive or financial reasons, users will revolt.
