You’ve planned the trip, booked the romantic hideaway, plotted your tour through the wine country and even arranged for a moonlit serenade. You’re all set, right? Wrong.

What if something goes awry? What if you miss your plane? Lose your wallet? Or find yourself in a fender bender? Well, if you have travel insurance, you have nothing to worry about.

Travel insurance is just that – insurance for when you’re traveling. From lost baggage to a missed connection to a cancelled trip to accidental death, travel insurance provides you with the coverage necessary to cope. Plain and simple.

Who do I buy from?

It’s recommended to buy your travel insurance through an insurance company or agent. True, you can also get coverage through cruise lines, airlines and tour operators, but if they go out of business, you’re out of coverage. Here are a few recommended providers:

  • Access America
  • Travel Insurance Agency
  • World Travel Center

What do I buy?

Comprehensive Policy – It’s not hard to figure out that this kind of policy covers you soup to nuts. That comes in quite handy if you’re traveling abroad. Trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, default and medical emergencies all fall under this umbrella. One note of caution, those with pre-existing conditions should check with their insurance provider to see if, and how well, they’re covered.

Default Insurance – Planning on taking a cruise, tour or flight on your trip? If any of these operators go out of business, default insurance covers your loss.

Trip Delay – Bad weather and mechanical delays. Two things you can’t control. You can, however, cover your unforeseen expenses as a result of these two things with Trip Delay insurance.

Supplemental Health Insurance – If you’re traveling overseas, you definitely want to be sure you have supplemental health insurance. If you get sick (remember that appendicitis?) or injured, the insurance will take care of the medical bills.

Your current health insurance may already cover your medical expenses while traveling, so be sure to find out before purchasing anything extra. If you have Medicare, you are NOT covered for health-care costs outside of the United States, so make sure you supplement your coverage before taking your trip.

Happy – and healthy – traveling!

Travel insurance — don’t be without it

PORTFOLIO DOCTOR And don’t assume OHIP will cover all of your medical expenses, say columnists David Cruise and Alison Griffiths

Jun. 4, 2006. 01:00 AM

Let’s just say, as a dedicated surfer of the world, you happen to leave a leg (or some other body part) behind while hanging ten off the coast of Avatura on the Tuaomotu atoll of Rangiroa. As the shark digests, you wonder if good old OHIP will cough up the necessary dough to cover the many medical costs associated with your new condition.

You already know the answer — not hardly.

OHIP only reimburses what the same medical care would cost in Ontario. However, if you have a credit card, almost any old credit card, you’re in luck. Even basic no-fee credit cards offer death and dismemberment insurance — $100,000 is the standard maximum, with up to $500,000 for most fee-based cards.

Travel Insurance: Peace of Mind or Waste of Money?

Travel Insurance 6 Comments »

AccountingWEB.com - May 22, 2006 - Travel insurance is nothing new. In recent years, however, it has attracted more attention and the debate regarding the value of the policies has grown more pronounced. Coverage has also expanded to include business travelers, extreme sports participants and expatriates, among others. How does a traveler know if travel insurance is worth the investment?

Like any kind of insurance, part of the “value” of travel insurance depends on a traveler’s own tolerance for risk. The rest of the value equation involves the cost and length of the trip, the purpose of the trip and the destination. For most travelers, purchasing travel insurance for international trips makes a degree of sense, while purchasing a policy for a domestic trip may not. There are exceptions of course, and some important business trips may be good candidates for travel insurance even if they take place within the U.S.

Travel insurance: Are you already covered?

Travel Insurance No Comments »

With tensions in the travel industry and the global political scene, more travelers are looking into travel insurance.

But the term "travel insurance" can mean widely different things and can offer either real benefits or an expensive duplication of coverage you probably already have.

If ever there was a purchase that calls for research and reading the fine print, travel insurance is it, says Edward Hasbrouck, author of "The Practical Nomad" series of travel books.

That’s because many of the reasons for which people would buy travel insurance, such as an airline or cruise line going out of business or the government shutting down every airport in the country, may not be covered.

Hasbrouck says he’s recommended trip cancellation and interruption insurance for years, especially if a trip is being paid for well in advance.

Let’s say you’ve booked a two-week walking tour of France and then take a spill and find yourself on crutches a week before you’re scheduled to leave. Or your mom has emergency surgery while you’re on an Alaskan cruise and you need to get home.

It happens all the time, Hasbrouck says, and the result is that vacations are ruined because people either cancel their trips and lose the money, or go when they’d rather stay home because they can’t get a refund.

Travel insurance "doesn’t deal with the emotional pain, but it allows you to make your decisions unclouded by money," Hasbrouck says. "The further in advance you’re paying, you’re crazy not to get the insurance."

Pricing for the policies typically is based on the cost of your trip, how old you are and how long you’re going to be traveling. As a rough guideline, expect to pay between 8 percent and 10 percent of the cost of your trip.

The best form of trip cancellation and interruption insurance will not only cover illness and injury, but also supplier default, which means the company folded. This became especially important for airlines since Sept. 11, Hasbrouck says, and for cruise lines, some of which have built too many ships and are on shaky financial ground.

TravelGuard International offers supplier-default coverage if it’s purchased within seven days of putting down a deposit. Likewise, their medical-expense coverage will cover pre-existing conditions if it’s bought within that window.

Know what you pay for
The key is to ask the right questions, read the fine print, and make sure that you’re actually getting what you think you’re buying.

Take flight insurance, for example. This is a life insurance policy that only pays off if you’re killed or maimed in a plane crash. According to the Independent Insurance Agents of America, you’ve got a higher chance of getting hit by a bus when you’re walking out of the airport than being killed in a plane crash.

Many travel policies will also cover you on the ground while you’re using "common conveyances," such as buses, trains, subways, taxis and hotel courtesy shuttles, but not private tour buses or rental cars. Chances are good, though, that you’ve already got this kind of coverage with your personal or company-paid life and/or accidental death insurance policy.

"Check with your company before traveling to determine if there are any provisions for travel assistance within your employment benefits," says Rob Berman, director of product management at The Hartford, one of a small group of companies offering travel insurance to businesses.

"For instance, employees who are covered under a group policy through The Hartford may be able to access emergency services when traveling 100 miles or more from home. What’s more, they may also benefit from a wide range of pre-trip informational services if their employer chose to offer them value-added travel assistance."

A homeowners or renters insurance policy generally covers the theft of your personal property, according to IIAA, even if you’re traveling out of the country. Some valuables, such as jewelry, cameras and laptops, probably won’t be covered, but check with your insurer. Hasbrouck recommends Safeware.com for computer insurance.

Most health insurance policies should cover medical expenses if you’re sick or injured, but may not apply overseas. If you’re headed for a remote location or have a medical condition, you might look into a policy that includes medical transportation expenses. An air ambulance can cost thousands of dollars and typically isn’t reimbursed by health-care policies.

Travel policies often will say the coverage is to get you to an adequate medical facility. The question to ask is: What’s the definition of "adequate?"

You may also have coverage from your credit card. Diners Club, for example, offers up to $350,000 in automatic travel accidental-death-and-dismemberment insurance if you buy your ticket with the credit card and automatic collision/damage insurance for rental cars. It’s full value rental car collision or loss damage. That coverage would be primary and would override the insurance you have for your personal auto.

Plus, you don’t have to file a claim with your insurance company, which generally means you won’t have a rate increase.

Covered by your insurance?
Regardless of which credit card you use to rent the car, your auto insurance should cover you while you’re driving it. If you’re only covered for liability, though, it might be worth getting collision coverage.

The coverage offered at the rental car counter should be a last resort, Hasbrouck says, because it’s expensive and poor coverage. Credit card coverage varies, he says, and may exclude convertibles or sport utility vehicles. Check with your auto insurance and credit card company to see what’s covered before you leave home.

Diners Club also automatically provides up to $1,250 in baggage coverage beyond what you’d get paid if the airline, cruise line or other common carrier loses your luggage.

It’s definitely not worth the money to pay for lost-luggage insurance, Hasbrouck says, because it’s extremely rare for a carrier to truly lose your bags. They might misroute it for a day or so, but eventually, your bags should catch up with you. In the meantime, the airline will usually give you cash to buy a few necessities.

Besides, if they actually lose your bags, the things you really care about — jewelry, cameras and computers — almost certainly will be excluded.

Also check with your credit card company about supplemental coverage. Diners Club offers really cheap supplemental coverage. It includes up to $1.5 million in flight insurance and $150,000 worth of life insurance on the ground, but the real peace of mind comes in the trip cancellation, interruption or airline bankruptcy coverage that’s bundled with the life insurance. You can get up to $500 per ticket.

Don’t Trip Up When You Travel!

Market Comment

[ May 17, 2006 ]

By Cliff D’Arcy

With the start of the World Cup just over three weeks away, hundreds of thousands of fans will soon be heading for Germany to watch England’s (or other teams’) progress through the tournament.

Sadly, if past form is anything to go by, a sizeable minority of these fans will be travelling without tickets and will face disappointment when they are turned away at the turnstiles. What’s more, many of them will be jetting off to Germany without travel insurance, which is a complete no-no!

In fact, according to the latest annual report on travel insurance from independent financial researcher Defaqto, intense industry competition has brought down premiums to levels last seen four years ago. Around 170 providers of travel insurance are fighting over a market worth £700 million a year, which has led to sustained price falls over the last year.

Unfortunately, cheaper is not always better, so the experts at Defaqto are warning Brits not to be tempted by low single-trip premiums, as many of these polices provide inadequate "budget" or "cutdown" cover. The table below shows typical prices for single-trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance policies:

Policy type

Policy description

Individual cover (£)

Family cover (£)

Single trip

Europe (one week)

USA (two weeks)

Annual

On the other hand, some policies charge as little as £8 to £9 for a two-week holiday, which suggests that they offer poor value for money, once the very limited cover is taken into account. My advice would be to use the above table as a benchmark to compare policies, because if a premium looks too good to be true, it probably is!

Here’s a few more travel tips:

  • You may think that you could save yourself a few pounds by not buying travel insurance. However, is it worth exposing yourself to serious losses if, for example, you were hospitalised following an accident or illness?
  • NEVER buy insurance from a tour operator, as these policies can be five (even ten) times as expensive as Best Buy (NYSE: BBY - news) protection! Thanks to increased competition, particularly from Web-based providers, travel agents now sell fewer than half of all travel insurance policies, which is good news, but we could do better…
  • If a premium looks remarkably low, check to see what cover is on offer, as it may not include all of the features that you need.
  • Always declare any existing medical conditions and health problems to your insurer; otherwise your entire policy (and all claims) may be invalidated.
  • Take information on how to claim with you and keep it safe, as you may need to report a claim to police or airlines within 24 hours of any incident.

So, before you book your summer holiday, ski trip, city break or short hop over to the Continent, be sure to shop around for Best Buy travel insurance cover. With premiums at historically low levels, there’s absolutely no good reason to travel abroad without it!

Defaqto: Travel insurance cheaper than you think

Travel Insurance No Comments »

According to online financial surveyors Defaqto, many people still have an unrealistically high expectation of how much travel insurance costs.

Brian Brown, associate director at Defaqto, said that many people are taking what amount to unnecessary risks when going on holiday by not taking out insurance cover for a few pounds, which could in theory save you thousands.

"A lot of people just don’t think of it," he said. "Some people are even reluctant to spend eight pounds - that’s three drinks on holiday."

With the rise in online shopping for cheap flights, many people opt out of travel insurance that will add more money on top of the holiday cost but Mr Brown says the hit on your wallet may not be quite what you were expecting.

"With travel brochures you get it into your head that it costs £30 for cover [but] if you shop around it can come to a lot less."

MONEY | Is travel insurance worth the cost?

Travel Insurance No Comments »

How do you know whether your next trip is worth the extra cost of a travel insurance policy?

As with any type of insurance, consider how much you can afford to lose, advises David Lytle, editorial director at Frommers.com.

A $500 plane ticket is probably not worth ensuring, but a $10,000 package vacation would be harder to swallow if a natural disaster struck your destination or the tour company went belly-up.

Also, some travel purchases may be refundable, while others aren’t. Low-cost plane tickets booked online increasingly come with tight restrictions, but hotels will generally allow you to cancel as late as 72 hours in advance, depending on location and season. Cruises and package tours usually require you to pay up front and may not offer refunds.

Generally, you won’t have to insure a domestic trip.

A comprehensive policy generally covers the entire cost of your trip from transportation to accommodations and anything included in a package vacation, minus the price of the policy.

Before you buy luggage protection, rental-car liability and medical and evacuation insurance, check to see what your current insurance policies cover. Your car policy or credit card may cover you.

Also, take into account any special circumstances. If you have a medical condition or plan to do extreme skiing in the Alps, medical and evacuation coverage could be in order.

Avoid travel insurance rip-offs

Travel Insurance No Comments »

Rosanna Spero, Daily Mail
19 May 2006

FAMILIES may have to pay through the nose when travelling in the school holidays, but there’s no need to be ripped off on the travel insurance.

Competition means there are some good deals around. In general this means avoiding the insurance offered by your travel agent or holiday company.

For instance, Nationwide has just revamped its single-trip policies to let children go free. The cost for a family of four taking a two-week summer break in Europe is now £49.13.

Youngsters up to 22 are covered while in full-time education, but once they start work, must buy their own adult policy.

There are better rates around, though. Direct Travel leads the pack, charging just £21 for the same family holiday, again covering children in full-time education until the age of 22. Insure & Go would charge £31.40 and the Post Office and Sainsbury’s Bank £41.80.

These rates are around half those of travel agents and tour operators. Thomas Cook quotes £81.96 and Thomson £79.96 for the same cover.

Thomson charges each member of the family individually, with infants under two travelling free and a child rate for those between two and 16. Nationwide would charge the same family of four an extra £28.60 if their 16-year-old child was at work, and the Post Office adds £22.

Before you buy a policy, check the insurer’s definition of family:

• How many children are allowed per family?
• Do they all have to live at the same address? If one parent lives at a different address to their children but is taking them away, can a family policy be bought?
• Can children travel without an adult? (For annual policies rather than single trips.)
• At what age do children stop being classified as such after they leave full-time education?

Those taking more than one holiday a year are often better buying annual cover, with the best value policies coming from Direct Travel, the Post Office and Insure&Go.
