It was the mid-1980s, and Terry Trent and his wife, Carol Adams, had broken ground for their dream home. Atop a hill east of Sacramento, Calif., the remote, 10-acre site in the Sierra foothills offered plenty of privacy. As the couple eventually learned, it offered plenty of something else as well: a nasty type of asbestos known as tremolite. Respiratory exposure to this mineral has been linked with mesothelioma, a lung cancer that quickly turns fatal.

EXPERTS responsible for approving NHS treatments have been accused of putting money before patients after blocking the use of an anti-cancer drug.

New patients with the asbestos-linked cancer mesothelioma will no longer be offered the drug pemetrexed disodium, sold under the name Alimta.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) yesterday published its findings from a study into the cost and effectiveness of the drug.

The appraisal concluded that the drug would not be recommended for use except as part of ongoing or new trials.

Brigitte Chandler, one of the country’s top legal experts on asbestos-related diseases, said it was an option that was being taken away from people diagnosed with the condition.

LONDON JUN 26, 2006 (Agence de Presse Medicale for Reuters Health) - UK cost-effectiveness watchdog, NICE, has rejected Eli Lilly’s Alimta (pemetrexed) for treating mesothelioma, the local arm of the U.S. company said on Monday.

In a statement timed to tie in with the anticipated announcement of the rejection by NICE, Lilly UK said: "NICE has recommended a ban on people with an asbestos-induced cancer, mesothelioma, receiving the only licensed medicine for the disease."
