BIRTHDAYS
When a man has a birthday he takes a day off, but when a woman has a birthday she takes a year off.

BLUNDERS

An early morning customer in an optician’s shop was a young woman with a determined air. She addressed the first salesman she saw. "I want to look at a pair of eyeglasses, sir, of extra magnifying power."

"Yes, ma’am," replied the salesman; "something very strong?"

"Yes, sir. While visiting in the country I made a very painful blunder which I never want to repeat."

"Indeed! Mistook a stranger for an acquaintance?"

"No, not exactly that; I mistook a bumblebee for a black-berry."

Idol speculation

American Idol, Entertainment, Taylor Hicks No Comments »

Philip Cowley

May 30, 2006 11:30 AM

The headline in the Guardian was "American Idol outvotes the president"; the Telegraph had "US pop show victor attracts more votes than any president"; and according to The Times, the winning contestant was "the pop idol with more votes than any president".

Except that he wasn’t: Taylor Hicks, the winner of this year’s American Idol (which as someone said last week is like Pop Idol, but for people who need reminding in which country they live), may have a cracking voice, prematurely grey hair, and an ability to dance in as if he is simultaneously taking a dump - but he did not gain the votes of more Americans than any US president in history.

Some 63.4m votes were cast during the final of American Idol, compared with the 62m George Bush received in 2004, but the former figure is for both candidates in the final whereas the latter was for Bush alone. The comparable figure for the 2004 US presidential election was just under 122.3m, which is almost double the number of votes cast in the Idol final. So of the three headlines, two - those in the Telegraph and the Times - were wrong. (And before the Guardian gets too smug because its headline was right, it claimed that the highest number of votes cast for any US president was the 54.5m cast for Reagan in 1984; Bush topped that in 2004 by almost 9m).

And then there’s the teeny-weeny problem of multiple voting, which is not only allowed in programmes such as American Idol but positively encouraged, and which renders all such comparisons utterly futile anyway. It is estimated that around 43m Americans watched the Idol final. Even if all of them voted, around half must have done so more than once. In practice, lots of people won’t have voted, while others will have done so frequently. That doesn’t happen in real elections - at least not outside of bits of Birmingham (our Birmingham, not the one in Hicks’s Alabama).

And note that for all the hype about how politics

Lip-syncing the latest wave in teen Web world

Entertainment, Websites No Comments »

She is 12, maybe 13, old enough to know all the lyrics to a rock song, but her smooth skin and soft features betray that she has only just entered adolescence. As the 3 minutes, 22 seconds of buffered video footage begins, she grabs a pair of headphones and begins bopping her head in time to the bass drum. She smiles. She grimaces. She adjusts the volume. And then, right before the vocals start, she turns toward the camera. Her large brown eyes look right at the viewer as she begins to mouth the words to Bloc Party’s "Banquet": "A heart of stone/a smoking gun/I can give you life/I can take it away."

It is a moment at once innocent and emotional, personal and pure enough to make you cry.

It is the kind of thing that used to stay behind closed bedroom doors, when bored teens would grab a hairbrush as a mike and privately fantasize in front of a mirror about being the next hot pop star. But just as teenagers have laid bare their diaries to the public on Web sites such as LiveJournal, they are now broadcasting these sometimes awkward, sometimes slickly choreographed performances on video Web sites, allowing strangers to peek into their worlds as they channel their favorite musicians, trying on a dream identity even as they try to discover their own.

A few of the more outrageous lip-sync videos have become Internet phenomenons, forwarded from one viewer to the next. Millions of people have watched the two Chinese college students who call themselves the Back Dormitory Boys lip-sync with conviction (and a whole lot of swaying) to the Backstreet Boys’ "I Want It That Way" and they have since become full-fledged celebrities in China.

Pomme and Kelly, two 15-year-olds from the Netherlands, have made a total of 10 videos. The girls developed such a large following in the last few months that they became overwhelmed by the attention and recently decided to take their videos down from the Internet. (Aware of the creepier elements of their fame, they didn’t want to use their last names, or say where exactly in the Netherlands they are from because "weird people could use that to find out lots of information about us.")

Pomme and Kelly’s videos have a silly, high-energy and specifically youthful quality — they flail their arms, they use such props as paper money and cell phones, and Kelly has a predilection toward making faces at the camera. The girls use a Canon Powershot A250 and never edit their videos (because they don’t know how). Their catalog includes songs such as Shania Twain’s "Ka-Ching," Afroman’s "I Got High" and Britney Spears’ "Toxic." Their costumes — scarves in their hair, oversized sunglasses, goofy hats — are further proof that these two friends still have one foot firmly planted in the dress-up games of childhood.

"We just like to act weird (in front of the camera)," they wrote in an e-mail interview, still unsure of what to make of all the attention. "We love to make a fool of ourselves just by doing lip-syncing on weird songs, and apparently people seem to like it."

They’re right. In March, 27-year-old Ben Petro from Brisbane, Australia, launched GoogleIdol.com, a Web site that allows visitors to vote for their favorite lip-sync videos. "I spend a few hours every day slacking on Google Video and I saw a lip-sync video by these two girls from the Netherlands and it kind of hit me, this is really becoming a bit of a craze," Petro said. "I thought there should be some kind of competition. And then `Idol’ popped into my mind."

In the first week the site was active, GoogleIdol received more than 7,500 hits. By the time the first competition ended, more than 40,000 people had voe and Kelly won.

Gary Brolsma, a bespectacled 19-year-old from Saddle Brook, N.J., became something of a media phenomenon after he made a lip-sync video to a Romanian dance song called "Dragostea Din Tei" (he called it "Numa Numa") in which he repeatedly performed his variation of the raise-the-roof arm motion. He was interviewed on "Good Morning America," made an appearance on VH1’s "Best Week Ever" and was featured in a New York Times article before he decided to stop speaking with the media.

Andy Greenwald, a music journalist and author of "Nothing Feels Good: Punk Rock, Teenagers and Emo," says it’s not surprising that teens are broadcasting these personal videos to the world. "It’s the teenage sensibility of LiveJournal and My Space," he said. "The only things you share are your innermost thoughts. Teenage vulnerability is the official language of the Internet.

"Teenagers are shy and stumbly and nervous, and these songs give them the words they want to be saying," Greenwald said. "Kids have always put themselves in the role of the song: `That’s my life, that’s me.’ Now they can literally perform it as `me.’" s `me.’"

‘Idols’ Defy Hollywood Standards

American Idol, Entertainment, Taylor Hicks No Comments »

Mo Rocca Salutes The Ordinariness Of The ‘American Idol’ Winners

(CBS) Comedian and CBS Sunday Morning contributor Mo Rocca heralds America’s newest Idol Taylor Hicks for his average looks.

"American Idol," Fox TV’s wildly popular singing contest, crowned its fifth Idol, Taylor Hicks of Alabama, Wednesday night.

A lot of people have joked around comparing "American Idol," where callers vote week after week for an eventual winner, to a presidential election:

Southern candidates do seem to win disproportionately.

The contest encourages voting - or at least voter fraud. A 12-year-old girl will end up voting 10 times in one night. A typical "American Idol" "voting irregularity."

But the better comparison might be "American Idol" and Hollywood.

The idols that the American people have chosen are different looking from the idols that Hollywood typically anoints.

The first Idol, Kelly Clarkson, who’s gone on to a huge career, looked strikingly ordinary. She was a little bit … chubby. Before I get a bag of angry mail, I mean chubby by Hollywood’s rail-thin standard.

Season two’s winner, the velvet teddy bear Ruben Studdard, is extra chubby. I’ll leave it at that.

What about Idol No. 3 Fantasia Barrino? I’d call her gritty.

Carrie Underwood is pretty, sure, but in a sweet babysitter kind of way. Not a GQ cover girl, like Christina Aguilera.

And now Taylor Hicks, last week’s winner. Hicks is America’s newest teen idol at 29, by Hollywood standards a geriatric idol, Modern Maturity beefcake maybe.

He’s got gray hair. What’s more, he actually looks older than his age. Honestly he looks like his father’s brother, not his son.

That’s not supposed to happen in Hollywood. In show biz, as you get older, like Kenny Rogers, you’re supposed to look younger-ish.

Plus, Taylor wears awful clothes — a purple jacket in the final round — and he’s a terrible dancer. Simon Cowell, the show’s judge-slash-despot, said that he danced like the drunk father at his daughter’s wedding.

But the voters, including legions of teenyboppers and me, went for him over runner-up Katharine McPhee, the sultry Californian with impossibly pearly whites, the kind of beauty that emerges from some Hollywood hydroponic pond.

Taylor, the American people and I know you’ll resist Hollywood’s efforts to make you over. Stick with who you are. You could be the new face of Lipitor. Millions of teenage girls will keep track of your cholesterol count.

OK, maybe I’m pushing it.

Let’s just say that when aging TV and pop star David Hasselhoff cried tears of joy when you won, he was crying for all of us — and some of us are even older than 29.

Taylor Hicks’ Biggest Fan?

American Idol, Entertainment, Taylor Hicks No Comments »
Condi Rice was among the millions who watched the American Idol finale — and her man won

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice took time out from matters of war and peace to catch this week’s finale of American Idol. Unlike many adults who claim they watch the show only because their kids commandeer the TV, Condi is an unabashed fan.

Rice was rooting for fellow Birmingham native Taylor Hicks and will soon send him a congratulatory letter, says a State Department official. The Alabama connection helps explain why she has long been glued to the show: last year’s runner-up Bo Bice is also a ‘Bama boy, as was the winner of the second Idol competition, Ruben Studdard. But Condi is also part of nationwide Idolmania, as Tuesday night’s competition drew some 32 million viewers — the biggest audience of the show’s five seasons.

According to the State Department official, Idol isn’t the only junk food on Condi’s TV diet. She also watches Law & Order and was a fan of The Bernie Mac Show before its cancellation. But while there are no plans at the moment for a Condi-Taylor duet, Idol fans cast a total of 63.4 million votes Tuesday night — which host Ryan Seacrest pointed out was "more than any President in the history of our country has ever received." And since 35% of American Idol fans believe the votes cast in the singing competition count as much or more than in a Presidential election, maybe those itching for Condi to run in ‘08 will try to get her a guest appearance on the show.

American Idol 5 Most Memorable Moments

American Idol, Entertainment No Comments »

With American Idol 5 officially over, it’s time to take a look back and reflect on the season.  There were surprise eliminations, phone line conspiracies, and show-stopping performances.  All in all, American Idol 5 proved to be just as much of a controversial thrill ride as American Idol 4.  From Katharine McPhee’s button popping performance to Paul Abdul’s bizarre behavior to a Clay Aiken look-a-like nearly going into shock on the stage, here are Reality TV Magazine’s picks for the most memorable moments from American Idol 5.

Even though Paula Abdul didn’t have any former contestants make accusations of a romantic relationship this year, she still proved to be as controversial as ever.  During the audition rounds, she surprised viewers by showing a little bit of a mean side.  Her must baffling moment this year though came during one of the elimination shows.  As Kinnik Sky and Heather Cox nervously waited to find out their fate, Paula Abdul started laughing and told Seacrest that Simon told her that the reason the two of them were on the stage was “because one of them ate pizza and the other one ate salad.”  Later in the same show when Kevin Covais and Sway Penala were on stage facing elimination, Abdul told Seacrest, “Simon gave me advice and he said that on the X-factor he always refers to a fortune cookie and says the moth who finds the melon..finds the cornflake, always finds the melon, and one of you didn’t get the right fortune cookie.”

Thanks to some wild outfits by Taylor Hicks, fashion became a heated topic of conversation on American Idol.  Simon Cowell couldn’t stand Taylor Hicks’ outfits, but the Soul Patrol loved them.  However, even though Taylor Hicks’ purple jacket certainly deserves honorable mention, it was Katharine McPhee that provided the most memorable fashion moment of American Idol 5.  When Katharine McPhee took the stage in a tight yellow dress, millions of male viewers’ eyes were glued to the screen.  When a button popped revealing McPhee’s underwear, it became the most talked about wardrobe malfunction since Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl half–time show.

The most memorable breakout performance goes to Elliott Yamin.  After Paris Bennett was eliminated, most in the media thought that Elliott Yamin was certain to be next.  During the early stages of the competition, American Idol producers treated Elliott like the invisible man.  Even as Elliott quietly made his way into the top four, little was known about his background.  That was until Elliott Yamin delivered not one but two show-stopping performances during the Elvis performance show.  Elliott went from certain elimination to safety in the top two with Taylor Hicks.  As Elliott made his way into the top three, millions of viewers got to watch as he returned to his hometown of Richmond, Virginia to be greeted by thousands of cheering fans.  Elliott Yamin went from the finalist that nobody knew to the media darling that everybody loved in the course of a week.  Seeing a guy like Elliott Yamin be so successful on American Idol reminded viewers why American Idol is the greatest show on television.

As is becoming standard with every season of American Idol, there were a couple surprise eliminations during American Idol 5.  Most viewers didn’t expect Bucky Covington to go after he had his best performance of the competition with “Fat Bottomed Girls,” and there were quite a few gasps let out when Mandisa Hundley was sent home.  However, the most surprising elimination moment of course has to go to Chris Daughtry.  While there were numerous conspiracy theories about phone lines being redirected to other contestants, the most common explanation seemed to be that Daughtry’s fans thought he was safe and didn’t vote as repetitively as McPhee’s fans, who knew she was at risk.  Whatever the reason, Chris Daughtry joined the Constantine Maroulis club of rockers who were eliminated before their time.

As expected, American Idol 5 had its share of memorable show-stopping performances.  We couldn’t pick just one in this category because the finalists offered up so much diversity that there were several performances that stood out that were difficult to compare because they represented different styles of music.  During the audition round, Paris Bennett became the early favorite when she performed “Take Five.”  However, she was soon displaced by Chris Daughtry who wowed viewers with his take on “Hemorrhage” during the Semi-Finalist round.  And of course each of the three finalists had their show-stopping moments as well.  Elliott Yamin with “Trouble,” Katharine McPhee with “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” and American Idol winner Taylor Hicks with “Living For The City.”

The American Idol 5 finale also offered up several moments of its own.  Even though David Hasselhoff’s tears and Prince’s surprise appearance would certainly qualify as memorable moments, it was a former American Idol runner-up who stole the show.  As Clay Aiken look-a-like Michael Sandecki sang “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me,” the real Clay Aiken walked out behind him.  Michael Sandecki’s surprise reaction was the leading topic of water-cooler conversations on the day after the finale.

What were your favorite moments from American Idol 5?  Do you agree or disagree with our picks?  Please post your own favorite moments in the comments section below.

I blazed the trail for our new American idol

American Idol, Entertainment, Katharine McPhee, Taylor Hicks No Comments »

Taylor Armerding

This is a very big week for me. I am finally a winner in the name game.

A guy named Taylor is the new American Idol. A guy named Taylor, just like me. My name is international. It is hot. It is cutting edge. It set 63 million hearts fluttering. Or, maybe it was just a million hearts fluttering enough to set their speed dial 63 times. Whatever. I’m not going to argue. I’m going with the 63 million. It makes me feel better about myself as I bask in the reflected glow of Taylor Hicks, even though he has only a moderately good set of pipes and doesn’t twitch as well as Joe Cocker.

Whatever. He’s an idol. And he and I have so much in common. He’s from the South. I’m from the North. He’s famous. I’m famous, but nobody knows it. He has hair. I don’t. He’s young. I’m not. He’s going to be rich. I wasn’t, am not and won’t be. He gets invited to Leno and the hottest nightclubs. I get invitations to Chamber of Commerce breakfasts and selectmen’s meetings. But hey, we have the same name.

So I’m making the most of the glory. It has been a bumpy road to the top.

See, I was blazing the trail for "Taylor" nearly 30 years before he even showed up in the maternity ward. He owes me. At that time, the only thing a name like Taylor offered was a lot of grief. I guess my parents must have known it had a better future, but I had to go through a lengthy dysfunctional childhood first.

Actually, I’m named after my father. I used to claim that the reason he did that was so that he wouldn’t have to be the only person in the world with three last names. But he never went by Taylor. Our first name is Hudson, which is the one he uses, and which is usually a last name. Our second name was, at the time, almost always a last name. And Armerding couldn’t be anything but a last name.

We moved a lot when I was small. I think I went to four different schools in my first five elementary grades. By the second year, I had the opening day routine down with my new classmates:

"What’s your name?"

"Taylor."

"No, what’s your first name?"

"Well, that’s actually my second name, but I go by my second name because I’m named after my dad, and he uses the first name."

"So Taylah’s (New England pronunciation) not your last name? OK, well, what’s your real first name?" (By this time a small group had usually formed — fascinated at a male creature who wasn’t named Johnny, Bobby, Billy, Andy, Donny, Kenny, Scotty, Ronnie, Terry, Stevie or Davey.)

"Well, my first name is Hudson."

"Hudson? What are you, a car?"

And that, of course, was enough to prompt howls of laughter and derision. Somehow, I still managed to make friends, probably because I ran fast enough to be a good team member in a game of gang-up tag. I recall one of my buddies even suggesting that he didn’t want to embarrass me by calling me Taylor, but since Hudson was too hard a name for him to remember and he could remember I was named after a car, that he was just going to call me Ford.

Taylor was not cool at the time. Just weird.

Time went by, I struggled through middle school, and my name actually became a slight social advantage in high school and college, when it went from weird to interesting, at least to females. There were plenty of girls who wanted to meet a guy with a name more esoteric than Bill. Sustaining their interest was another matter. I think that’s when I took up the guitar, out of desperation.

But over the last 20 years or so, Taylor has faded from being weird to mildly unusual to outright normal. Taylor doesn’t even raise an eyebrow when there are all these guys running around with names like Ashton, Shaquille, Dylan, Finnegan, Gowtheman, Antoine, Keanu, Hamish and Jasper.

And along with that, sometime in the last decade or so came the feminization of Taylor. There seem to be way more girls with that name than boys. So Taylor Hicks gets credit for giving it a bit more masculine visibility again. I predict a little crop of boy babies in the next couple of years — OK, maybe just the next 15 minutes — named Taylor.

See, I blazed the trail; he’s preserving its male identity. We have so much in common.

When Success Shines Through Failure in American Idol

American Idol, Entertainment, Katharine McPhee, Taylor Hicks No Comments »
Roy Thomsitt

Like about 200 million other people around the world, my wife and I settled down to watch the American Idol Grand Finale earlier this week. With the benefit of satellite, we watched live from our tropical island home by the Sulu Sea in the Philippines. We were already happy, as our two favourites, Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks had, the previous evening, been where they belonged, singing in the final. Whoever won did not matter; we loved them both, but after Taylor Hicks final song, he did look the likely winner. However, they would both, as well as Chris Daughtry, have made worthy American Idols.

There were many memorable moments during the American Idol 2006 series, but for me one of the most memorable, and significant, came with the announcement of Taylor Hicks as the winner. I was delighted for him. He has been an inspirational entertainer all the way through the American Idol series, never flirting with the exit door (despite Simon Cowell’s attempts to shove him there), and with a unique ability to take just about any song, turn it into his own, and bring the audience to its feet. Taylor Hicks is…well, Taylor Hicks; never afraid to do his own thing and entertain the audience. Even if Simon Cowell wrote a funeral dirge, Taylor Hicks could turn it into something special with his unique character, and have the house rocking.

Taylor Hicks being announced as the winner was, of course, the peak of the series; it was what all the contestants had been aiming for since the auditions. However, for me there was something very special about that moment, that some may not have been so aware of: the reaction of Katharine McPhee. Her reaction was one of genuine delight for Taylor’s success. There were no artificial congratulations, no tears of disappointment, no sombre face because she had lost the final; just magnanimous delight for Taylor Hicks being voted American Idol 2006.

Katharine McPhee is a born star, and she will have a good singing career, a dream come true for her. Yet, despite her stunning beauty and exceptional singing talent, she remained modest even at the pinnacle of the show. In her own failure to win the contest, she simultaneously recognised with magnanimity the success of Taylor Hicks, and glowed in her own success of getting that far herself. She did not exude one iota of failure in her demeanour as the announcement was made. If anything, she epitomised success.

Seeing Katharine McPhee at that moment reminded me of how intermingled success and failure are. Even the same achievement can be viewed by one person as a success, and another as failure. No doubt there are some mean spirited people who will dismiss Katharine with a simple “oh, she was beaten, she failed.” But anyone who genuinely respects achievement of any type would appreciate what she has done to get as far as she has, and in such style.

The parents of Katharine McPhee must be very proud of what their daughter can do, has done, and will do in the future. But they should also be very proud of themselves for bringing up such a delightful young woman, who can take her moment of disappointment and turn it into a celebration of success, both for her and her conqueror, Taylor Hicks.

Soul Patrol Push Hicks To American Idol 2006

Quoting Taylor Hicks, "The Soul Patrol rides on!"

Individualism was rewarded on American Idol this season. The ‘regular Joe’ morphed into an American hero. The whole small town guy makes good by beating the system fantasy that many of us love and hold to our hearts came true. Taylor’s appeal is spanning from the true music aficionados, to the against-the-mainstream misfits, to the retro music fans, to the baby boomers desiring a return to a time where real American idols were born, not churned out pre-fabricated, dressed and dyed and plasticized.

Talent was rewarded this season on American Idol. This reality talent show surpassed being about just pop pipes, to a show premiering true talent with real stage presence and high-decibel charisma and charm.

Drive was rewarded this season on American Idol. From the beginning I have said Mr. Hicks is not a stupid man. It was evident to me, from Taylor’s initial audition that he was a man with the desire, the drive and the intelligence to make this happen. He had that fire in his eyes. He projected a definite sense of self, independence and originality.

Taylor Hicks has played this Idol game with the savvy and know-how he ripped from the streets, derived from honest to good, blue collar On-the-Job training. Performing at regional honky-tonks and clubs helped to hone his sensibilities on music delivery and reading his audience. There are many aspiring artists wanting to enter the music business that should take to school the precedence Mr. Hicks’ has set on this talent show.

Taylor began shaping an image from the beginning of this season. Mr. Hicks came in with a dream, with a vision, with a plan. The acoustic performance of Sam Cooke’s classic, "A Change is Gonna Come". His enthusiasm, his trademark, "WOOOOO!". The much discussed ‘harp walk’, Hicks’ enters the judges’ quarters, harmonica playing, working that stiff-legged bluesman walk where he discovers he is indeed moving on to Hollywood. His attire. The blazers representative of several things, communicating he was taking the show seriously, the fact he was more mature than his counterparts, but most importantly the blazers helped create that old soul vibe. Researching some of Hicks’ heroes whom he patterns his music after; Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, James Brown, Solomon Burke you see these men as careful with their appearance as they were with staying true to their music.

Song choice always holds an ultimate role of importance on this show. Hicks weekly demonstrated what he’s about and for the most part successfully chose songs to match up with his style. "Levon" by Elton John garnered him praise, "Taking It to the Streets" by The Doobie Brothers brought out Taylor’s fierce intensity as a performer.

That energy translated into his real ability to communicate mind, body and soul to the audience. This performance generated tons of mixed media attention for Taylor and made him a household name. His sense of humor emerged in the pre-performance clip about his days as a shopping mall Easter Bunny.

He made a few mistakes, but learned from them. "Easy" by Lionel Richie; lesson learned to lay off a little on the "Woo’s", concentrate more on the singing. "Country Roads," and "Just Once," were his two weakest performances of the competition. With the performance of "Just Once," an inkling of doubt, a slight lessening of confidence became a ghost shadow in his eyes.

Taylor had endured week after week of poundings from Cowell, mixed reviews from Jackson and Paula. Realistically, there’s just so many times a guy can be compared to ’someone’s drunk Dad at a wedding’ and not let it affect him somewhat. I found myself comparing Idol to a football game. Your team’s been playing the first quarter pretty well, not too many penalties, a fumble, but not much yardage lost, then into the second quarter the penalty flags begin to fly fast and furious, the other team scores a lead breaking touchdown, 2 minutes before the second quarter ends.

The half-time whistle blows.

Third quarter, Taylor exploded on the Idol field in a wild hot paisley shirt and blue suede shoes with pink laces. He belted out "Play that Funky Music White Boy!" by Wild Cherry, it was an in-your-face, ‘up-yours-Cowell’ moment. Great move, it enthused his fans who applauded his seemingly flip-off to Cowell criticisms and negative critiques.

Pairing that song with "Something" by George Harrison was brilliant. "Something" gave weight to Taylor’s real vocal abilities; he sung it masterfully, beautifully. The game had turned tide. "Jailhouse Rock" had been a popular on-line request for Elvis Week. I had a request out that he sing "In the Ghetto." Elvis week scored that comeback touchdown for Taylor.

May. 16 brought Bruce Springsteen’s "Dancing in the Dark" and Joe Cockers’"You are So Beautiful." Score another for Team Soul Patrol! Last competition, the Finale, Taylor brought back previous favorite "Levon," considered by some fans an anthem, "Levon wears his war wound like a crown" a tribute to the challenges overcame weekly on this show, and it is important to Hicks’ for family value meanings he holds dear.

"Living for the City," a 1974 hit by Stevie Wonder had previously brought Taylor accolades from his fans. The topper of the Finale was his performance of the American Idol song created to be his first released single. Titled, "Do I Make You Proud". This title and the song are incredibly appropriate for Taylor for a couple of reasons; one, when he had talked to his father, Brad Hicks, about trying out for Idol his father had commented he just might as well just go out and buy a lottery ticket, two, T

aylor had been feeling the pressure of timing, and the need to make something out of himself, have real success. He did not want to have his years playing honky tonks to be a waste, and he didn’t want to let Daddy down. I hope that Mr. Brad Hicks is a happy man today, knowing his son wasn’t wasting his time. Confident now that music was a true calling for Taylor, not just a young man’s pipedream.

Persistance was rewarded on American Idol this season. Team Soul Patrol never gave up on Taylor Hicks. Through thick; through thin (even through the occasional fumbled ball, the "Country Roads" penalty flag). Let’s reflect upon Taylor’s journey through Idol and re-live some highlights in an fitting montage created with Tay’s band’s music playing. (Thank you Comrade631.)
