Companies quickly pick up CheckOut as a viable form of payment

Earlier last month, Google formally launched its online payment system called Google CheckOut. The new system is focused on providing security to users a well as vendors said Google. Interestingly, news broke out on Google CheckOut several weeks ahead of a formal announcement and Google claimed that its new service would not compete with eBay or PayPal.

Since the launch on June 29th, Google CheckOut has been receiving rapid adoption by online vendors. Some notable companies include:

eBay, one of the most popular online spending destinations however announced that it would not be supporting Google CheckOut. In fact, eBay earlier this month added Google CheckOut to its list of non-accepted payment options claiming that Google CheckOut was too new and thus not a trustworthy source for handling online transactions. eBay informed its members that it may exercise account suspensions and loss of premium statuses if sellers are found to be using Google CheckOut.

Numerous reports claimed that users were outraged by eBay’s decision and that they were generally unhappy with PayPal’s services over the last several years. Google stated that its service is highly secure and its experience with handling transactions for its AdSense and AdWords services indicated that CheckOut is a trustworthy service.

Despite the lack of support by eBay, Google CheckOut is gaining popularity. Support from companies like StarBucks, Fossil, PBS, uBid.com and others indicate that Google CheckOut is on its way to becoming one of the few trusted forms of online payment.

I guess journalism schools should teach it: whenever you’re doing a story about anything, take a look and see what’s happening on eBay.  I didn’t do that when I wrote last week’s post Click Fraud Worsening?, which noted that a recent study found that more merchants were pulling back on their keyword advertising out of concerns over click fraud.  But a Blogging Stocks reader named Joe did take a look around eBay, and what he found is quite remarkable.

See for yourself. Head over to eBay, search for "Adsense clicks", and as of this morning you’ll find more than a dozen auctions offering everything from "5 Google Adsense Ads Clicks Hits Each day for 5 Days" (BuyItNow for $1.99) to  "1000 Adsense hits clicks website marketing traffic.  Adsense clicks delivered within 10 days. Different IP’s" (12 bids, up to $31) to "Unique: Guaranteed Unlimited Legal Adsense Clicks - Extremely Simple" ($9.99). 

Here’s the sales copy, verbatim, for one offer:

We don’t deal with worthless hits/clicks. These are real people clicking on your Adsense ads. Real money flowing into your Adsense account.   

People are selling on Ebay the " I’ll look around your site and click ads " scheme. THIS DOES NOT WORK. You will get banned from Adsense right away. Receiving multiple clicks from the same IP address will get you banned. That’s why you should NEVER click on your own ads.

Thus being said, the traffic you will get will be: never from the same person (or IP address) in a 24 hour period.

Now, the only other thing you MUST watch out for YOURSELF is your CTR (click thru ratio). If you win this auction and I bring you 250 clicks, your Click-thru will soar up - Google will then most probably ban you. Bring in a constant flow of traffic to your website. Keep your Click thru rate between 1% and 3%.

Now, I can’t guarantee that you will get a certain number of clicks or that you will not get banned. I’m not Google - who knows what they do. However, I have been bringing in clicks and making a steady $1500 a month and haven’t gotten banned using this source.

Of course all of these offers may be frauds, but a number of these sellers have very high Feedback Scores. And some go into considerable detail as to their techniques–one fellow apparently uses MySpace as a way to organize his clicksters. 

This raises some interesting questions, chief among them: doesn’t this violate eBay’s listing policy against "encouraging illegal activity"?  Or perhaps this is one of those gray areas where eBay chooses to look the other way — particularly considering that the particular ox being gored here is rapidly turning into their number one competitor. 

In any event, it does provide yet one more proof point of the basic law of cyberspace: On the Internet, if it can be abused, it will be abused.

At the seminars here this year, eBay sellers are showing an amazing boost in familiarity with technology compared with similar sessions I attended last year and the year before.

Yesterday I sat through a jam-packed session on "search engine optimization." It was about how sellers can tweak their pages on eBay and on their own Web sites to get better play in search results when people are looking for related stuff at Google, Yahoo and Microsoft’s MSN.

EBay sellers asked surprisingly technical questions, even those struggling to understand the lingo. "What do you mean by natural results?" one dealer asked. "I don’t know what "natural" means."

eBay’s search geeks patiently explained the difference between paid search results, which are basically ads; and the "natural" or unpaid results that appear at all the major search engines. They also explained how eBay has a big staff working full time just to optimize the hundreds of millions of pages on eBay’s site, so they will appear higher in the results at Google, Yahoo and MSN.

"What’s a robots.text file and do I need one?" asked another man.

EBAy’s geeks explained it was a small text file some Web sites use to politely tell search engines where not to send their indexing robots on their sites. And no, most eBay dealers don’t need one, they said.

Bill Cobb, president of eBay North America, told me that eBay has large teams working on every angle of search optimization, both for buying keyword ads on search engines and improving eBay’s position in their natural results. In addition to optimizing eBay for "natural" display in the search engines, the company buys ads that appear when people search on certain phrases. EBAy has built a search dictionary of 15 million words and is constantly buying ads for those words.

"We have 80 to 100 people working on this," Cobb said.

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Online marketplace eBay Inc. is set to unveil a keyword advertising system for eBay sellers to promote auctions on other Web sites, borrowing from the strategies of Google and Yahoo.

Michael van Swaaij, eBay’s chief strategy officer, told a conference of software developers here on Saturday of plans to allow Web site affiliates to run contextual ads for eBay auctions in exchange for a cut of the resulting eBay sales.
