Everything happens for a reason. For American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee the reason she did not win the popular singing competition, might be because she’s destined to be a movie star.

The California beauty has apparently won over director Steven Spielberg, who has requested a private meeting with her.

"When you get some phone calls or you hear rumours … it definitely gives you a little bit of hope," she says, adding she’s also heard Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes want her to sing at their upcoming wedding.

"I’ve heard a lot of different rumours … I really don’t want to jinx anything to be honest."

One thing McPhee will confirm is her plans to collaborate with hit songwriter Diane Warren for her debut album.

"We want to get together and start writing some stuff together."

I looked at myself in the mirror in the early morning hours today and one word came to mind.

FINALLY.

After a four-plus month run, American Idol season five is officially over with; bringing some much needed relief to yours truly.

Don’t get me wrong.

Getting paid to watch and write about American Idol isn’t exactly a difficult job. And I know a lot of people would love to have this gig.

But watching every single minute of every episode of American Idol and writing about each show over a 20 week span can certainly take its toll, even on the most disciplined and crazed Idol fan.

After covering Idol for two years, I’m still amazed that there are people who actually have enough free time to sit there and watch American Idol in its entirety.

Being an Idol fan requires Herculean dedication and determination to sift through weeks of lame auditions, the Hollywood tryouts and the eventualy selections of the final 24 contestants. Then one by one, each contestant is picked off week after week.

At times, it seems like running a marathon would be easier than watching every freakin’ episode of American Idol. But I’ve done it two years in a row, so I feel I should give myself a gold star and a pat on the back just for surviving it all.

But what’s next?

Do I take the summer and fall off and hibernate? Certainly recharging my batteries so I can take on AI6 makes sense. And there’s certainly other things at phillyBurbs.com that need doing and are part of my job.

Do I follow another show and write about it? And which show(s) are worth covering?

My guess is that for the summer, “America’s Got Talent,” would be the one to watch. It sounds like an anything-goes kind of talent contest. Plus crybaby David Hasselhoff is one of the judges and Regis Philbin is the host. Will it be another reality TV catastrophe just waiting to implode? Or would the novelty of yet another Idol-esque show wear off too soon? Will anyone else even be watching?

For fall, my bet is that I’ll follow “Dancing with the Stars.” It’s one of the few reality shows that is able to attract a large audience the way Idol has managed.

That said I don’t want to watch a TV show and write about it and have no one end up caring. But then some of you would say that’s exactly what my AI5 coverage was.

Either way, I’m not exactly sure what my next move is; except I’m going to take a very long nap and sleep off this American Idol hangover. I guess this means I’ll see you next year for AI6. Hope you get some rest.

A backstage mole at this week’s "American Idol" finals tells me at least one producer was not happy that Taylor Hicks had won.

Hicks’ off-screen personality rubbed some "Idol" execs the wrong way.

Meantime, my spy says Andrea Bocelli was so smitten with runner-up Katharine McPhee’s voice that he’s made it known he wants to take her on his upcoming tour, if the "Idol" producers OK it.

And I hear Clay Aiken was not happy that he had to sing so long with Michael Sandecki, an overzealous Aiken impersonator who turned their duet into a geekfest.
